Michael Dalton, 1952-2015

October 5th, 2015

Michael Dalton   It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Michael Dalton, our consultant in Petersfield from 2012 until serious illness forced him to cease to practise as a lawyer this summer.

Michael qualified as a solicitor in 1981, and founded his own firm, Daltons, in 1986, working from offices on Hayling Island before moving his practice to Petersfield.

Michael’s clients valued his advice on commercial and business matters and particularly on commercial property. Michael was heavily involved in the local business community for many years, including a term as President of the South East Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

We know that Michael will be sadly missed by his his clients and the Petersfield business community.  Our thoughts are with his family.

One of region’s best-known practitioners in commercial property law has joined Graeme Quar & Co.

Michael Dalton acts as a consultant for the commercial law specialist from June 1st.

Graeme Quar & Co, with a head office in Fareham and a recently opened one in Petersfield, has seen turnover rise by more than one third over the past 12 months on the back of heightened activity by clients.

Michael is a senior commercial property and business solicitor who operated his own law firm, Daltons, for more than 25 years in south Hampshire, more recently in High Street, Petersfield.

Last summer Michael closed his successful firm and, since then, has been providing legal advice to a select group of London-based clients, dealing with high-value property transactions.

Graeme Quar, managing director, said: “Michael has a market-leading reputation for commercial property legal services and is very well known in the Petersfield business community and will be able to introduce clients to us to expand our base in the market town and along the A3 corridor.

“Also, previous clients of Michael’s firm still seek to utilise his expertise, so we will be able to welcome them to the fold through Michael.

“We are also in active discussions with at least one other consultant, with a view to them joining up, because demand for our services continue to grow and we’re getting a lot of referral work in. There is a lot of activity happening out there by all sorts of businesses, despite or because of the economic headwinds.”

Michael, who lives locally, will be working at Petersfield.

He said: “There are strong synergies between Graeme’s business and what I do, which is acting for entrepreneurs in a range of commercial property transactions, from acquisitions and disposals to lease work.

“I look forward to generating and servicing instructions from clients under the Graeme Quar & Co banner – this is an exciting new chapter for all of us.”

Yesterday evening a team of 3 of us with our friends Sam Farrow of Farrow Creative, Matthew Walton of Woodbridge Estates and David Aguirregoicoa of Ordnance Survey took part in a quiz night at the Folly Upstairs in Petersfield. The quiz was organised by Cox Manning accountants as a fund raiser for The Bereavement Counselling Charity.

The evening was a great success, and we have to thank Louise of Cox Manning for organising such a fun event, which also raised more than £750 for the charity.

I am sure that Christine Quar will enjoy the ladies’ gym membership which Graeme won in the raffle.

Oh – and thanks to the brilliant contributions of our friends Sam, Matthew and David, our team emerged as the winners, so it was a good night all round.

The oval ball game

On Saturday Graeme and I were pleased to sponsor a table as we enjoyed lunch at Petersfield Rugby Football Club before the hosts took on Farnborough RFC.

Over an enjoyable lunch we caught up with some old friends as well as making new ones, and then it was down to the serious business of watching the match. Both sides played some very good rugby to cheer us up on a cold but sunny afternoon. We even had the pleasure of watching former Scotland and Lions player Derek White come on as a second half replacement for Petersfield to score a try within a matter of seconds.  The result was rarely in doubt as Petersfield won 44-27, to make it a very happy clubhouse afterwards.  Farnborough cannot have been too upset as their 4 tries earned them a bonus point in the league.

In the photo you will see Graeme and myself in amongst the Petersfield RFC 1st XV after the match. In the front row is Christine Quar, who the lads insisted should have pride of place holding the ball.

We hope to make this entertaining afternoon a regular event and to continue to support Petersfield RFC.

Many thanks to Simon Taylor of Farnborough RFC for taking the photograph and sending it to us.

Walk this way …

Our advertisement appears today in the Petersfield Post and other local papers.  If you do not read those papers, you can see our quarter page ad below.

It has been a time of changes at Graeme Quar & Co.  We have moved in to our new office in Petersfield, where we are now able to meet clients. Rest assured that we will still be able to offer you a cup of our fabled coffee!

At the same time, our IT system has also been completely overhauled. It took about 3 days, but we now have a new server and everyone has a brand new computer with all the latest software. It is always a pleasure to be using a new PC which boots up in an instant and is ready for action straight away. I timed it: a couple of weeks ago it took more than 5 minutes from switching on the computer in the morning to being ready to send an e-mail. Now it is less than 1 minute!
